We have received a couple questions via Facebook seeking understanding about future school construction plans. Over the summer, the Board of Education approved plans for the District to build two new elementary schools. These two schools would open serving the communities of Herriman and South Jordan for the 2017 school year. Funding for these projects will come from the District’s capital reserve account.
Capital reserves are combination of monies held back in case of emergency and funds the District has saved by going under budget for several years. The Board’s Finance Committee has determined the balance is sufficient to meet emergency needs and still build these schools.
For additional information on future construction needs, please review the 5-year Building Construction Plan. This plan shows six additional schools, which will be needed by the year 2022. These schools are contingent upon growth and would require the District to bond. Remember, this plan may change as the District continues to review student housing needs. The costs are estimates and will change once official bids are received. Contact us on Facebook so we can address your questions in future Fun Fact Friday’s.
